Winery
Armenia is one of the cradles of vine growing. The winemaking chronicle in Armenia is almost as ancient as the viticulture in the country. According to the evidence of the ancient Greek historians, high quality wines were being exported from Armenia about two thousand years ago. Armenia has six major winemaking regions: Ararat, Armavir, Tavush, Aragotsoton, Syunik, and Vayodz dzor. The Ararat Valley is the main winegrowing region where up to 60% of the country’s grapes are grown. Due to the favorable climatic conditions grapes grown in this region contain a high concentration of aromatic substances and sugar, which gives a unique taste to the wine. In addition, there are nearly 30 soil varieties in the Ararat valley. As a result, the same grape variety can have multiple taste nuances in different parts of the region. Winemaking in Armenia was on its pick in early 1980s, when the vineyards in Armenia covered a territory of 36,500 hectares. However after the collapse of the Soviet Union the wine production level sharply decreased. In the period of 1990-2002 total territories of vineyards decreased by 16,200. The recovery of the winemaking started from 2003, when the total territory of vineyards grew by 1,900 hectares, covering a total territory of 12,000 hectares. About 70% of Armenian wine is exported to the CIS countries and the remaining part to USA and EU countries.
